Settling In After a Move to Senior Living

Moving to a senior living community is a time of joy for many older adults, but it can also come with some anxiety. From questions like, “How will I fill my days?” and “How will I make friends?” to “What if I don’t feel at home?” and “How long will it take me to feel comfortable?”, a move can be fraught with ‘what-ifs’ and ‘hows’.

The good news is that settling in after a move is often easier than you imagine. This is especially true at Waterstone at the Circle. Check out our top tips that help new residents at The Circle adjust quickly and take advantage of all our active lifestyle has to offer right away.

Getting into the Groove of Senior Living | Tips To Help You Settle In

1 | Make your space feel like home.

Moving to a new space is an opportunity to showcase who you are. Make your new home a reflection of you by highlighting your interests, showing who is important to you with photographs and keepsakes, and decorating with items that bring you joy. The more it feels like home, the sooner you’ll feel settled in.

2 | Introduce yourself to new neighbors.

Make it a point to say hello and introduce yourself to those around you. This can open up opportunities to get involved, make new friends, and learn more about the community. At Waterstone at the Circle, you’ll quickly find our community is filled with a sense of community and camaraderie.

3 | Invite friends and family members over.

Share your new home with your friends and family by hosting a housewarming party or maybe even a weekly movie night. This can help you make new memories with those you love in your beautiful new home.

4| Create a routine and goals.

While many seniors look forward to retirement and having endless free time to do as they please, some may worry that a lack of structure will make them feel bored or even overwhelmed. Instead, create your own schedule and routine and stick to it.

If your goal is to get fit, pencil in time for physical activity with one of our personal trainers. If you want to get involved with the local community, ask our life enrichment team about opportunities to volunteer or give back. If you still want to work, you can do that, too! Here, the choices are all yours.

5 | Try out new activities, attend programs you’re interested in, or join a club.

Activities for seniors in independent living communities like Waterstone at the Circle are endless. From book clubs, art classes, and fitness groups to social hours, cooking demonstrations, and game nights, you’re likely to find there’s more to enjoy than can be done on any given day.

Don’t let yourself get so caught up in your routine that you stop pursuing new activities, passions and hobbies. Engage in lifelong learning, attend lectures, take advantage of new volunteer opportunities, and try out a new skill. Not only will you enhance your brain power and skill set, but you’re also likely to make new friends and connect with others with similar interests. Ask our life enrichment team to introduce you to activities and programs you might enjoy.

6 | Explore the community and your surrounding area.

Waterstone at the Circle is ideally located at the foot of Chestnut Hill in Boston, putting you near a variety of things to do. From cultural events and museums to shopping and delicious dining, there’s plenty to explore once you arrive at our community. Our concierge would be more than happy to assist you with purchasing tickets or arranging transportation to area attractions and events.

At Waterstone at the Circle, we work hard to ensure the premier senior living experience you expect! Our dedicated team members are ready to lend a hand if or when it’s needed. Whatever your need, we are at your service and ready to assist!

8 | Give yourself time to adjust.

It might take some time to get used to your new retirement community. Some residents feel at home right away, while it takes others some time to adjust, and that’s normal. Lean on team members, get involved in the community as you feel comfortable, stay in touch with family and friends, and simply enjoy your new, carefree life.

Many of these communities, like Waterstone of Lexington, also offer dedicated care and support, giving seniors the best of both worlds along with confidence for the future.

Of these independent retirement communities, how do you choose which is best for you? If you’re not sure, Waterstone of Lexington is here to help with tips on choosing the right retirement community for you.

5 Steps to Choosing the Right Retirement Community

Step 1 | Identify what you’re looking for.

Many older adults ponder what type of senior living community they’d like to live in far before actually making a move. If you’re among these seniors who have planned for life at a senior living community, you may already have a list of what you’re looking for. If you don’t have an idea of what you’d prefer, consider these points.

Location

Do you prefer to live in a beautiful setting, but still close to a city where there are plenty of things to do? If your ideal retirement community offers a range of on-site and off-site programs and activities, Waterstone of Lexington might be perfect for you.

Programs

Days within retirement communities should be full of engaging programming, wellness opportunities, and fun social events. At Waterstone of Lexington, this is certainly the case! Our calendar is full of social, cultural and recreational programs designed with our residents’ preferences in mind.

Dining

Dining options should be something you savor. At Waterstone of Lexington, it’s always a delight. Learn more about our exquisite dining experience featuring chef-prepared, seasonal meals using fresh, locally sourced ingredients whenever possible.

Step 2 | Consider your current and future needs.

If you’re searching for a community where you can receive the care you’ll need as you age, you’ll want to be sure to choose one that offers a range of supportive services. Communities like Waterstone of Lexington offer personal care assistance and support in our assisted living community, and even memory care in a separate building on our campus, Bridges by EPOCH at Lexington.

Step 3 | Schedule tours.

Once you’ve honed in on what you want, and what you could need in the future, schedule tours of senior living options that offer as many items as possible on your list.

During your tour, ask plenty of questions, like:

  • What do residents’ days look like?
  • What is included in your lifestyle?
  • Are care options available?
  • How do your programs and services enrich the lives of your residents each day?

As you visit, remember to talk with residents, families and team members to hear their thoughts as well.

Step 4 | Narrow down your choices.

After your tours, evaluate how each community made you feel. If a specific tour of a community left you with a good first impression and joy, it might be a sign you’ve found a good community for you.

To evaluate which communities you should continue exploring, ask to visit again, and see whether you can try some programs, attend their events, and even enjoy a meal. It may also help to show up unexpectedly, which will give you a deeper look into the lifestyle you may be choosing. Then, based on your experiences, narrow your choices down.

Step 5 | Make your decision or start again.

Once you’ve narrowed down your choices, you should be left with one final step: choosing the senior living community that is the best fit for you, or starting over. If you’ve made a firm decision, contact your chosen community to begin the process and find out what’s next.

If finding the right senior living community didn’t happen this time around, consider why this is the case. Use those answers to reevaluate and restart the process when you’re ready to dive into the senior living search again.

Benefits of Early Detection of Memory Loss

It’s a difficult topic for anyone to think about, but if you suspect you or a loved one might be suffering from early memory loss, action is far better than inaction. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 90% of Americans say that if they were exhibiting confusion and memory loss, they would want to know if the cause of the symptoms was Alzheimer’s disease. Yet more than half of those over age 45 with subjective cognitive decline have not talked with a healthcare provider about dementia-like symptoms.

It’s completely valid and understandable to experience fear and apprehension surrounding a potential diagnosis. However, by taking steps toward detecting and diagnosing memory loss early, you can gain peace of mind as you plan for the future and start any possible treatment. Detecting memory loss early can enable you to honor the wishes of family members as you all navigate the journey of a diagnosis of dementia.

Signs It Might Be Time for a Screening

Early stages of memory loss can look different in different people. The below list is a good starting point about determining if it may be time for a screening with a physician.

  • Memory loss that disrupts daily life
  • Challenges in planning or solving problems
  • Difficulty completing familiar tasks
  • Increasing confusion with time or place
  • Trouble with vision or spatial orientation
  • Problems with communication
  • Decreased or poor judgment
  • Changes in mood or personality

Remember, memory problems do not automatically indicate a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia. There are types of memory loss that are part of aging. It is a necessary first step to work with a physician to find out if memory challenges are truly related to dementia in order to plan for the future.

The Benefits of Detecting Memory Loss Early

Should your screening indicate an early diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment, you may feel sadness, anger, frustration or despair. The below guidance shows the benefits of this knowledge of early detection and will help individuals and their families as the disease progresses.

Getting to know the road map of what comes next.

Early detection means you’re in a place to learn what is going to come next. While people with dementia can have vastly different types of disease and experiences, there are certain changes you can plan for and make decisions now about how you want your experience of living with dementia to progress. Trust your medical professionals to help you understand the progression of the disease and what may come next.

Medical benefits and treatment options.

Research is being done constantly for various neurodegenerative diseases. With an early diagnosis, you can work with your physician to see what treatment options or clinical trials are currently available and if there are any medications that could be helpful in slowing disease progression. Treatments typically respond better in earlier stages of the disease.

Additionally, this would be an ideal time to make any positive lifestyle changes such as quitting smoking, controlling blood pressure, exercising, and staying socially active.

Social and emotional support.

Being diagnosed with dementia can be incredibly overwhelming for the individual and family alike. Fortunately, there are copious resources available for education and encouragement as you navigate this new territory. Maybe that means joining a support group, being more intentional about documenting memories and sharing stories, or even taking that “bucket list” trip. Perhaps it means sharing the diagnosis with friends and family on your own terms, before changes start to happen in your life.

Many people have walked in your shoes before – lean on the experience of others and the many resources available to help guide you. If you are looking for resources and support, the Senior Advisor at our community would be happy to share more about our monthly educational sessions and support groups held on Zoom, as well as other community services that can help you in your journey.

Planning for the future.

Early diagnosis allows for the individual to discuss their wishes for each stage of the disease. They can be part of the legal, financial and end-of-life decision-making; designating powers of attorney; creating a living will; and indicating medical care preferences. These important conversations ultimately reduce the weight on family members and allow them to plan for the quality of life desired for their loved one.

In your conversations, you might decide that caring for your loved one at home would be too difficult, so it’s a good idea to research your options together. Many senior living communities, like Waterstone on High Ridge, provide services to ensure your loved one is cared for during every step of their journey. Our expert memory care at Waterstone on High Ridge is supported by the experts at Bridges by EPOCH and features dedicated support and unique programs within a thoughtfully designed household. Comparing Independent Living and Assisted Living

Is it possible for two different senior living options to offer engaging lifestyles, enriching amenities, and programs tailored to resident interests? Though it may sound like it’s too good to be true, it’s not. In fact, it’s even better, with one of these options even providing the added benefit of customized care and support. We’re talking about independent living and assisted living at Waterstone of Lexington.

To better understand each of these offerings, we need to take a deep dive into their similarities and differences. Then, you’ll discover how both of these senior living options can make life even better for older adults who choose to move.

Digging into the similarities and differences of independent living and assisted living.

If you or a loved one have been considering senior living options, you may be wondering which lifestyle is best for your situation. Below we will share what you can expect from each living option while answering some of the most common questions we receive.

Who takes advantage of independent living and assisted living?

When you stack up independent living vs. assisted living, you’ll find that those who choose each service aren’t really that different. Anyone who chooses these services can experience an engaging and enriching senior lifestyle with access to a range of services and amenities to enhance life each day. But, since the question is who takes advantage of each, we’ll narrow it down more.

Older adults who choose independent living are those who:

  • Live independently, often with no additional or minimal care support
  • Look forward to the possibilities and social opportunities retirement communities offer
  • Enjoy living worry-free with services designed to eliminate daily chores and the hassles of homeownership
  • Desire a plan in place for the future in the event care needs change

Seniors who choose assisted living want:

  • Privacy and independence but without support close at hand
  • Personalized assistance with activities of daily living
  • A vibrant lifestyle with daily activities and events
  • Peace of mind of health care services nearby

What does independent living offer?

While we gave a little insight into this above, there is much more to senior living communities than meets the eye. This is especially true at Waterstone of Lexington. What can you expect from our independent living community?

  • Beautiful apartments with refined details, featuring a range of floor plan options
  • Luxurious common areas for activities and socialization
  • Compelling social, cultural and recreational programs
  • Dynamic social events and outings
  • Exquisite anytime dining
  • Fitness and wellness programs
  • Personal training plans and group fitness classes by professional trainers
  • Mind-body studio and juice bar
  • Heated indoor pool
  • Full-service salon
  • On-site concierge
  • Private underground parking
  • Outdoor nature paths

If support becomes necessary, we also offer an on-site coordinated care program for our independent living residents, where our premier care partners provide services in the comfort of residents’ private apartments.

  • Personalized care consultations
  • Daily planning
  • Home health coordination
  • Medication management
  • On-site geriatric primary and specialty care services
  • Routine wellness visits
  • An experienced staff trained to navigate your healthcare needs
  • Overnight support staff

It is important to note that some independent living communities may offer far less than this, so when considering your or your loved one’s options, be sure to evaluate wants and needs to ensure you’re choosing the right lifestyle for now –  and for the future.

What does assisted living offer?

Assisted living offers access to the same enriching Waterstone lifestyle that independent living residents enjoy – but it comes with more. Here, residents also benefit from:

  • Well-designed, private apartments with a choice of floor plans
  • Comprehensive, customized care plans
  • Support delivered by our attentive team
  • Personalized support with activities of daily living
  • Customized wellness programs
  • Coordination with ancillary providers
  • Programs, activities and events
  • Three chef-prepared meals daily
  • Housekeeping and laundry services
  • Transportation services

How do costs differ?

This can depend on what type of lifestyle you’re searching for. While it’s true that assisted living often costs slightly more because of the added aspect of care, we also make senior living more flexible.

At Waterstone of Lexington, our independent and assisted living community is rental only, meaning you or your loved one won’t need to worry about:

  • Paying for steep entrance fees to access independent living
  • Paying for unused assisted living care – until it’s needed
  • Being locked into a contract

This is often the perfect choice for seniors, no matter what level of care they require.

When is a senior community right for myself or a loved one?

For many older adults, this is a deeply personal subject, and the truth is, it depends. For some seniors, they’re ready to move right now, taking in as many of the programs, services, amenities and learning opportunities as they can. They may also love knowing the community they choose has care available, if it becomes a necessity. For others, they aren’t ready to make a move until they need extra support or personal care to continue living the lifestyle they love.

At Waterstone of Lexington, we typically suggest moving as soon as possible. This is so residents can:

  • Get accustomed to their new lifestyle
  • Explore everything we have to offer without limitations
  • Enjoy all our active lifestyle provides before care is needed
  • Make new friends and meet like-minded individuals
  • Experience the support that’s needed as soon as it’s needed, without having to seek out care during an emergency

We’ve only brushed the surface.

You can learn more about independent living and assisted living at Waterstone of Lexington by scheduling a visit. If you’re interested in memory care for a family member with memory loss, our sister community, Bridges by EPOCH at Lexington, can provide the right level of care to suit their needs, too.

Experience our lifestyle for yourself and see why so many others have made a move today.

Ways To Reduce the Symptoms of Seasonal Affective Disorder

As the days get shorter and colder, the impacts of the winter season are upon us. The seasonal patterns of dreary and dark winter days can make us feel more lethargic and less motivated, as well as less interested in physical activity and socialization. Sometimes we classify this as “the winter blues,” but in more serious cases where depression is evident, we identify this as seasonal affective disorder (SAD).

According to the Mayo Clinic, seasonal affective disorder likely impacts millions of Americans, including those in senior living, and is “defined as a type of depression that’s related to changes in seasons – SAD begins and ends at about the same times every year. If you’re like most people with this condition, your symptoms start in the fall and continue into the winter months, sapping your energy and making you feel “moody.” Generally, the symptoms of SAD resolve when the spring months arrive, but other individuals can still see the effects into the spring and summer months as well.

Symptoms and Signs

The following are the most commons signs and symptoms of seasonal affective disorder:

  • Increased sleep and daytime drowsiness
  • Loss of interest and pleasure in activities formerly enjoyed
  • Social withdrawal and increased sensitivity to rejection
  • Irritability and anxiety
  • Feelings of guilt and hopelessness
  • Fatigue, or low energy level
  • Decreased ability to focus or concentrate
  • Trouble thinking clearly
  • Increased appetite, especially for sweets and carbohydrates
  • Weight gain
  • Physical problems, such as headaches

The most important thing to do if you’re concerned about depression or seasonal affective disorder is to make an appointment with a medical professional. A diagnosis of SAD may be made after a careful mental health exam and medical history done by a psychiatrist or other mental health professional.

Similar to the symptoms of depression, the symptoms of SAD can start out mild, but they can sometimes get progressively worse if left untreated. For older adults, we are focused on addressing this potential struggle with winter depression before it begins.

Combatting the Effects of Seasonal Affective Disorder

Below, we’ve outlined four ways to help you or a loved one with reducing the symptoms commonly associated with seasonal affective disorder. There are things you can start doing today to help boost your mood, improve your circadian rhythm, and build a good foundation of support to get you through the dark, cold winter months.

Get plenty of natural light

It’s believed that seasonal depression is partially caused by the dwindling daylight hours present in the winter months. Make sure that your circadian rhythm is properly set by getting a good dose of natural light during the day. This also helps address a potential vitamin D deficiency.

If weather permits, a short walk around the block can be enough to charge you up. You can also sit near a sunny window for similar benefits. Another option is light therapy, where sitting in front of a light box can simulate natural bright light and has no adverse side effects.

Exercise and eat well

Regular physical activity and a healthy diet will do wonders for your mood, especially if you pack your plate with healthy fats, whole grains, and nutrient-dense vegetables and fruits. As for exercise, aim for 30 minutes a day, 5 times a week.

Group exercise or working with a personal trainer are both great options for physical activity, and both are offered at Waterstone of Westchester. Our partnership with professional trainers and our state-of-the-art fitness center come together to provide our residents with the opportunity to enjoy unique fitness programs as well as access to one-on-one personal training sessions.

Stay social

The power of friendships and community is unparalleled. Ensure you set aside time each day to connect with a friend or family member, and identify things you want to share or discuss. Send a text, make a call, or walk over to a friend’s apartment, and keep connecting. Waterstone of Westchester provides a community where socialization with others is effortless and meaningful.

Here, residents can enjoy a meal with friends in the dining room, participate in a group art class, play a round of cards in the game room, or simply catch up during cocktail hour in the bistro. Opportunities to nurture connections and create new friendships is just outside your door at Waterstone.

Giving back can be a great way to do just that while also giving yourself a motivational boost. Here are some ways that older adults can help other seniors or those going through tough times.

  • Donate gifts to a family in need
  • Spend time serving others in a soup kitchen
  • Have a food drive or a coat drive
  • Send packages overseas to soldiers
  • Pack up pet presents for area furry friends in animal shelters

What each person may be looking for in a senior living lifestyle is different, but one thing is certain – the right services and amenities are a must. When considering where you’d like to spend your future, make sure you’re effectively evaluating a community’s offerings to ensure you choose the right one for you.

Sizing Up Services and Amenities in Senior Living

Make a list of what you’re looking for.

Active retirement living isn’t one-size-fits-all; that’s why it’s important to list out everything you’re searching for in an active adult community. Doing so will help you decide where you should be touring and what independent living amenities you can’t do without.

Enriching Services and Amenities

Senior living communities typically include a range of services, amenities, and perks for older adults. These can include wellness programs, chef-prepared meals, transportation, maintenance, and housekeeping to provide a worry-free lifestyle. Often, as is the case at Waterstone at the Circle, these services are included in your monthly fee for simplicity and peace of mind. Waterstone at the Circle offers an exquisite culinary experience, concierge services, transportation services, fitness programs led by professional instructors and more.

Programs, Events and Entertainment

Not only do these perks fill your days with fun and enjoyment, but they also boost your spirits and keep you engaged and active. If you’re searching for a community rich in adventure and new possibilities, consider looking for a retirement community that offers field trips, outdoor activities, clubs, special interest groups, and social events. The dedicated life enrichment team at Waterstone at the Circle ensures our residents’ days are full and fulfilling.

Access to Support for the Future

Many communities also include access to a range of care services to support active adults, as needs may change over time. It’s important to consider services you may need before you need them – so you’re able to choose the living option that has a plan in place for the future.

Older adults who choose Waterstone at the Circle benefit from the ability to enjoy an active, independent lifestyle with wellness programs that enhance physical and cognitive health, as well as access to supportive care services provided by premier healthcare partners.

Location

If you know you’re among those who love to explore your surroundings, you’ll want to choose a community that puts you in the heart of it all. Choose a community that’s walkable, offers transportation, and makes it easy to enjoy the shopping, dining, and educational pursuits you want to continue enjoying. At Waterstone at the Circle, our location at the foot of Chestnut Hill puts you close to everything you love, with quick access to Boston and beyond.

What’s Next?

As you research what communities to visit, make a list of communities that offer these things and begin scheduling visits. Then, as you tour, follow these tips.

Make notes of your first impressions.

Write out what you liked, what you didn’t like, and what they had or didn’t have. Are any of the missing items deal-breakers? Cross them off your list and continue your search.

Immerse yourself in the community.

Ask to try the programs, see if you can spend some extra time there, stay for a meal, and explore the surrounding area.

Talk with residents, families and team members.

One of the best ways to get a feel for the community of interest is to talk with those who know it best. Consider asking:

  • How happy families and residents are with the services and amenities offered
  • What amenities and services residents thought they’d use that they don’t
  • How easy it is for the team to implement new programs if requested by residents
  • What residents love most about the community
  • How helpful or attentive the team members are

Evaluate what you’re willing to let go of on your list.

Most communities aren’t going to offer absolutely everything you’re looking for. Of those you’ve toured:

  • Which best meets your needs and wishes?
  • Are there any additional services and amenities that balance the missing ones out?
  • Does the community make you feel welcomed and at home?

Once you’ve asked yourself these questions, you’re likely to have narrowed down your best option.
