Maintaining an active lifestyle is essential at any age, but it becomes increasingly important for older adults. Regular physical activity can enhance mobility, improve mood, and promote overall well-being. Incorporating exercise into your daily routine doesn’t have to be daunting.

We’ll review how much exercise seniors need, benefits of physical activity, some exercises to help seniors stay active and healthy, and tips to get started on making exercise a consistent part of your day.

How Much Exercise Do Seniors Need?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that older adults aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week, such as brisk walking.

Additionally, muscle-strengthening activities should be included at least two days a week. This can be broken down into manageable chunks, such as 30 minutes a day, five days a week.

How Does Physical Activity Benefit Seniors?

Engaging in regular exercise offers numerous benefits for seniors, including:

  • Improved Cardiovascular Health: Regular exercise helps maintain heart health and reduces the risk of heart disease.
  • Enhanced Mobility and Flexibility: Physical activity strengthens muscles and improves joint flexibility, reducing the risk of falls and injuries.
  • Better Mental Health: Exercise releases endorphins, which can alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety.
  • Weight Management: Staying active helps in maintaining a healthy body weight, reducing the risk of obesity-related diseases.
  • Increased Bone Density: Weight-bearing exercises strengthen bones and reduce the risk of osteoporosis.
  • Social Interaction: Participating in fitness classes or group activities provides opportunities for socializing and building connections.
  • Reduced Stress: Physical activity reduces stress and promotes relaxation.
  • Improved Blood Circulation: Regular exercise improves blood flow throughout the body.

What Are Simple Exercises for Seniors?

Starting an exercise routine doesn’t require a gym membership or special equipment. Here are some simple exercises that can be done at home or in the community:

  • Walking: A low-impact exercise that can be done anywhere, and is great for improving cardiovascular health and maintaining muscle mass.
  • Chair Exercises: Sit in a sturdy chair and perform leg lifts, arm raises, and seated marches to increase strength.
  • Balance Exercises: Stand on one foot or walk heel to toe to improve balance and reduce the risk of falls.
  • Strength Training: Use light weights or a resistance band to strengthen muscles and improve bone density.
  • Practice Yoga. Engage in yoga classes to enhance flexibility, balance, and relaxation.
  • Stretching: Gently stretch to improve flexibility and reduce muscle stiffness.

How To Add Activity to Your Daily Routine

Building physical activity into your daily routine can be easy and enjoyable. Here are some tips to get started:

  • Set Realistic Goals: Start with small, achievable goals and gradually increase the intensity and duration of your workouts.
  • Schedule Exercise: Treat your workout like an appointment. Set aside specific times each day for physical activity.
  • Incorporate Activity into Daily Tasks: Take the stairs instead of the elevator, park further from the store entrance, or walk while talking on the phone.
  • Join Fitness Classes: Take advantage of the balanced exercise classes and programs offered at Waterstone. These classes are designed to cater to various fitness levels and provide a social aspect to exercising.
  • Create an Exercise Plan: Develop a regular exercise routine that includes a mix of cardiovascular, strength training, and flexibility exercises to ensure a comprehensive approach to fitness.
  • Stay Motivated: Make exercise fun and social by joining group activities, celebrating your milestones with friends, and staying positive about your fitness journey. Keeping track of your progress and rewarding yourself along the way can also enhance your motivation and enjoyment.

As you start your fitness journey, you’ll discover what activities you enjoy most and what works best for your body. This insight will help you develop a personalized fitness routine you love, making it easier to stay active and committed.

Hydration: A Key Component of Fitness

Staying hydrated is crucial, especially during the summer months when older adults are more prone to dehydration. Here are some tips to ensure you remain well-hydrated:

  • Drink Plenty of Water: Aim to drink at least eight cups of water a day and increase your intake if you’re exercising or spending time in hot weather.
  • Eat Water-Rich Foods: Incorporate fruits and vegetables with high water content, such as cucumbers, watermelon, and oranges, into your diet.
  • Rehydrate After Workouts: After exercising, make sure you hydrate to replenish lost fluids. Waterstone communities offer a bistro or juice bar with unique options for hydration after a fitness session.

senior couple enjoying salads outside on a sunny day

As the sun warms the earth and gardens burst with life, summer brings a bounty of fresh, seasonal ingredients ripe for the picking. For seniors, embracing the flavors of summer not only adds variety to meals but also offers a wealth of nutritional benefits.

In this guide, we’ll explore the importance of eating seasonally and highlight some of the best summertime superfoods to incorporate into your summer cooking repertoire.

What Are the Benefits of Eating Seasonal Foods?

Eating seasonally isn’t just about enjoying the freshest produce; it’s also about nourishing your body with the nutrients it needs as we age. Nutritional needs may change for seniors over time, making it even more crucial to prioritize wholesome, nutrient-dense foods.

Seasonal produce is typically harvested at its peak ripeness, meaning it’s packed with flavor and nutrients. By eating seasonally, seniors can ensure they’re getting the vitamins, minerals and antioxidants their bodies need to thrive. Keep in mind that the more colorful the food, the more likely they are to have the nutritious content that your body needs to maintain optimum health and fight off disease. Fresh produce is also typically high in both water and fiber, which work together to help support a healthy digestive system.

Additionally, seasonal eating supports local farmers and reduces the environmental impact of food transportation. By choosing locally grown, seasonal produce, seniors can support sustainable agriculture practices and reduce their carbon footprint.

What Are Some of Summer’s Superfoods?

With so many fantastic seasonal foods to eat in the summer, you may not know where to start. When you’re looking for the next great ingredient to add to your summer recipes, you’ll definitely want to consider these healthy options:

1. Berries

Summer is synonymous with berries, from juicy strawberries and blueberries to antioxidant-rich raspberries and blackberries. Berries are not only delicious, but they’re also packed with vitamins, fiber and antioxidants that support brain health and immune function. This is the perfect time of year to add fresh berries to yogurt, oatmeal, salads and smoothies, or even use them in dessert for a special treat.

2. Tomatoes

Is there anything more quintessentially summer than a ripe, juicy tomato? Tomatoes are rich in lycopene, a powerful antioxidant linked to heart health and cancer prevention. Use fresh tomatoes to make salsa, bruschetta, or a simple caprese salad with fresh basil and mozzarella.

3. Leafy Greens

While leafy greens like spinach, kale, and Swiss chard are available year-round, they’re at their peak during the summer months. These nutrient-packed greens are high in vitamins A, C, and K, as well as folate and iron. Incorporate them into salads and smoothies, or sauté them as a side dish.

4. Zucchini and Summer Squash

There’s nothing like cooked zucchini and summer squash on a summer day. Versatile and abundant, zucchini and summer squash are low in calories but high in fiber, vitamins and minerals. Spiralize them into noodles for a light and nutritious pasta alternative, grill them as a side dish, or bake them into muffins or bread for a sweet treat.

5. Corn

Sweet corn is a summer staple that adds a burst of flavor and texture to any meal. Corn is rich in fiber, B vitamins, and antioxidants like lutein and zeaxanthin, which support eye health. Enjoy corn on the cob, toss it into salads or salsas, or incorporate it into soups and chowders.

6. Watermelon and Cucumbers

Watermelon and cucumbers are both part of Cucurbitaceae, or the melon family, and both are made mostly of water which makes them wonderfully hydrating foods for summer. With high water content, it means they are both low in calories but still high in nutrients. Eat watermelon on its own or part of a salad for a refreshing twist. Add cucumbers to sandwiches or salads for a satisfying, healthy crunch.

7. Peaches

Peaches are a summertime favorite that are also considered a superfood as they are an excellent source of potassium, vitamin C, fiber, vitamin B6, niacin and folate. Peaches can help you maintain heart and digestive health as well as protect the body from diseases and some cancers.

Uncover the Facts: What Is Mixed Dementia?

Dementia, a collective term for cognitive disorders affecting memory, thinking, and daily functioning, comes in various forms and subtypes. As our population ages, the prevalence of this condition is on the rise, making it crucial to understand and address the nuances of each subtype.

One particularly perplexing subtype is mixed dementia, which presents a unique challenge for patients and healthcare professionals because of its diverse origins. Recognizing the need to demystify this condition is the first step toward providing better care and support for those affected, and we’re here to help.

What Is Mixed Dementia?

Mixed dementia is a condition where an individual exhibits symptoms of more than one type of dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, and sometimes other forms.

Vascular disease, specifically high blood pressure, plays a significant role in the development and progression of this condition.

Common Types of Mixed Dementia

Several types of this condition exist, each causing various symptoms. Below, we’re exploring some of the most common types.

Alzheimer’s Disease and Vascular Dementia

This type includes a mix of Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia. Alzheimer’s disease, which is marked by amyloid plaques and tau tangles, combines with vascular dementia’s impaired blood flow, causing a decline in cognitive function. High blood pressure is a significant risk factor.

Lewy Body Dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease

In this combination, Lewy bodies and Alzheimer’s pathology intertwine, resulting in symptoms such as:

  • Visual hallucinations
  • Limited mobility
  • Tremors
  • Fluctuating cognitive states

How Is Mixed Dementia Diagnosed?

A diagnosis of these conditions requires a multidisciplinary approach to accurately assess symptoms and differentiate them from other forms. Most often, it is diagnosed through a comprehensive process, including:

  • A thorough medical history assessment
  • Physical examination
  • Cognitive testing
  • Neuropsychological assessment
  • Brain imaging, including MRI, CT, and PET scans
  • Blood tests
  • Genetic testing

While advances in diagnostic technologies and clinical assessments have improved the ability to diagnose these conditions during a person’s lifetime, there are still instances where the complexity of the condition or overlapping symptoms may make it challenging to distinguish between different types definitively. Because of this, there are times this condition may not be detected until an autopsy study is completed.

Treatments for Mixed Dementia

Managing this condition involves addressing each form’s specific dementia symptoms and causes. While there is no cure, various treatments and interventions aim to enhance quality of life and slow the condition’s progression.

Medications

Cholinesterase inhibitors and memantine are prescribed to manage cognitive symptoms, especially in cases where vascular and Alzheimer’s components are at play.

Lifestyle Interventions

Lifestyle interventions, including regular exercise and a balanced diet, are crucial for managing risk factors like high blood pressure.

Supportive Therapies for Caregivers

For caregivers dealing with the challenges of this condition, stress management and support groups play a vital role.
