Waterstone of Westchester recently celebrated a very special milestone for resident Kurt Goldschmidt, who turned 103 surrounded by family, friends, and fellow community members.
Born in Hamburg, Germany, in 1923, Goldschmidt is a Holocaust survivor who later built a meaningful life in the United States. He worked as a social worker supporting young mothers in Brooklyn and East New York before opening a travel agency, which he operated for more than 50 years.
The birthday celebration included cake, balloons, gifts, and a gathering of loved ones, including Goldschmidt’s daughter, son-in-law, and great-granddaughter. When asked about the secret to his longevity, Goldschmidt credited healthy eating and a daily martini.
Following the celebration, Westchester County Legislator Jen Puja presented him with a proclamation and announced that May 2 will be Kurt Goldschmidt Day in Westchester. As part of the tribute, his name will be displayed on the Jumbotron billboard in front of the Westchester County Center on that day.
“To recognize this tremendous milestone, we are going to display Kurt’s name in lights on our county Jumbotron on May 2, which will be Kurt Goldschmidt Day in the County of Westchester. I know his dance card is always full, so I wanted to make sure that he had enough lead time to be ready on May 2.’’
